Ovulation Induction With Timed Intercourse

What is Ovulation Induction?

This is the first step in the management of infertility. In this basic technique the female partner receives certain medications for development of one or more mature follicles in a woman’s ovaries. Pelvic ultrasound scans are used to access the endometrium (lining of the womb) and to determine how the follicles are developing. Blood tests may also be carried out to measure hormone levels and help to determine when a woman is most likely to ovulate (a woman’s most fertile time).

Ovulation induction cycles are followed by a hCG injection to induce ovulation. Then, the couple is advised to have intercourse.

Women that have irregular cycles or anovulation (do not ovulate) may be treated by this means as these women do not regularly develop mature follicles themselves.

FAQ

Ovulation induction is a medical treatment used to stimulate the ovaries to release eggs. Timed intercourse involves having sexual intercourse at specific times during a woman's menstrual cycle when she is most fertile, usually around the time of ovulation.

This treatment is typically recommended for couples who have been trying to conceive for an extended period without success, especially if the issue is related to irregular or absent ovulation in the woman.

Commonly used medications include clomiphene citrate and letrozole. These drugs stimulate the ovaries to produce eggs.

The timing of intercourse is typically determined by monitoring a woman's menstrual cycle using methods such as tracking basal body temperature, cervical mucus, and ovulation predictor kits. A healthcare provider may also use ultrasound scans to monitor the development of ovarian follicles.

Most doctors recommend having intercourse every other day or every third day around the time of ovulation to maximize the chances of conception.

Success rates can vary depending on the cause of infertility, the age of the woman, and other factors. On average, the success rate is around 10-20% per cycle. It may take several cycles to achieve a pregnancy.

Possible side effects include hot flashes, mood swings, abdominal discomfort, and an increased risk of multiple pregnancies (e.g., twins). Risks and side effects should be discussed with a healthcare provider.

The duration of treatment can vary from person to person. Many healthcare providers recommend trying for six months to a year, but this can be adjusted based on individual circumstances and age.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet, regular exercise, and stress reduction, can help improve fertility. Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption should be avoided.

If this method is unsuccessful after a certain period, your healthcare provider may recommend other fertility treatments, such as intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF), depending on the underlying cause of infertility.
